Minimizing Farm Fire Risks

12/12/2011 1:56:37 PM

Any farmer seeking farm insurance quotes hardly needs to be reminded that the agricultural industry is risky: farm work is one of the most dangerous occupations in the United States. Fire is just one of the risks, but it’s important for farmers to prepare a fire prevention plan and take steps to minimize the risk of farm fires.

  • A fire prevention plan for your farm should consider these matters:
  • What are the fire risks in farm operations and in the farm residence?
  • Can combustible and flammable materials and materials that accelerate fires be stored more safely? The locations of these materials should be documented.
  • Have fire drills been conducted so that family members and farm workers are trained in emergency procedures?
  • Is adequate water supply available for fire fighting, and is the farm accessible to the fire service?
  • Does everyday maintenance of the farm and farm buildings take account of fire prevention?
  • Have fire extinguishers, smoke detectors and fire alarms been installed where appropriate in farm residences and farm buildings?
  • Is smoking prohibited in farm buildings and by workers using farm machinery, and is the policy enforced?

Requesting farm insurance quotes and comparing products will help to identify insurance products that provide financial protection from fire damage and more specific farm related risks. However, a fire prevention plan should be your first step towards minimizing the risk of fire on your farm.
